I oppose the Department of Energy plan for closure of the West Valley Nuclear Site.
The radioactive waste stored in West Valley, NY should be placed in above ground, retrievable, monitored storage for eventual removal. West Valley is not a suitable place for permanent disposal of radioactive waste because the site is eroding at a rapid rate.
The Department of Energy plan to stabilize the buried tanks, the process building and the burial ground with concrete is unrealistic. We cannot rely on monitoring for hundreds of years to prevent contamination of the environment. Encasing the radioactive waste on site in concrete will be irreversible and will amount to abandonment of our responsibility to future generations.
The burial grounds and the high-level waste tanks should be dug up. Many citizens in Western New York and across the country hold this view. Please take a stand on this issue by publicly pressuring the Department of Energy to cleanup the West Valley Nuclear Site.
